Assateague Island National Seashore, Maryland

One of the east coasts best kept secrets is Assateague Island between Maryland and Virginia.  This uniquely preserved stretch of coastline is 48,000 acres and the ecosystem is so valued that three separate agencies manage and care for this land including the National Park Service.  While visiting the islands you can explore 12 miles of pristine beaches, go on a wildlife tour, and  observe some of the roughly 300 wild Chincoteague ponies that roam freely through the park.  Camping is permitted in certain areas of the park and kayaking in the calmer waters of the bay side is a favorite way to take in all the wildlife.
